Harris o Trump?

Kamala Harris o Donald Trump? Chi è uscito meglio dal faccia a faccia di poche ore fa sulla ABC? Una domanda che si fa tutto il mondo, al di là dell’effettivo peso di queste trasmissioni in termini di voti: per l’assurdo sistema elettorale americano, valido in un’epoca senza televisione e internet, dove di fatto l’elezione si gioca in quei pochi stati in bilico, i famosi swing states. A questo giro sono non soltanto la citatissima Pennsylvania, ma anche North Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia e Wisconsin. In ogni stato chi vince ha tutti i grandi elettori di quello stato, quindi si capisce perché la campagna elettorale ‘fisica’, fra comizi e il resto, sia concentrata in località ben precise e questi dibattiti nazionali alla fine servano soltanto ai giornalisti.

Detto questo, Harris o Trump? L’attuale vicepresidente degli Stati Uniti per quello che abbiamo capito ha puntato su ciò che ha fatto, o farebbe, di sbagliato Trump, dai rapporti con Russia e Cina ai suoi fallimenti imprenditoriali: per certi versi una strategia alla Trump, studiata evidentemente dagli spin doctor superfighi tipo quelli delle serie Netflix o HBO. L’ex presidente invece si è rivolto al suo elettorato, più che al centro, attaccando la Harris su aborto e immigrazione e in definitiva facendo Trump, senza grosse sorprese.

Da molti sondaggi risulta che in termini di gradimento ne sia uscita leggermente meglio la Harris, che però a noi è parsa recitare la lezioncina a memoria, facilitata dalle non domande dei giornalisti della ABC. Trump ci è sembrato più bolso che mai, e anche palesemente auto-frenato su molti temi. Unico vero guizzo la frase sugli immigrati che rubano e mangiano gli animali domestici, suggerita dalle recenti parole dell’idolo (di noi della periferia Ovest, beninteso) JD Vance sugli haitiani. Secondo noi l’impatto di questi dibattiti pieni (giustamente) di regole ammoscianti è limitato, di sicuro avrà più impatto l’endorsement post-trasmissione di Taylor Swift (per la Harris) delle parole scontate dei due candidati. Nel presente vale comunque la domanda: Harris o Trump?

Kamala Harris or Donald Trump? Who came out better from the face-to-face a few hours ago on ABC? A question that is being asked all over the world, beyond the actual weight of these broadcasts in terms of votes: because of the absurd American electoral system, valid in an age without television and internet, where in fact the election is played out in those few swing states. These are not only the aforementioned Pennsylvania, but also North Carolina, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia and Wisconsin. In each state, whoever wins has all the electoral voters in that state, so it is understandable why the ‘physical’ campaigning is concentrated in very specific locations and these national debates only serve the journalists.

Harris or Trump? The current vice-president of the United States has focused on what Trump has done, or would do, wrong, from his dealings with Russia and China to his business failures: in some ways a Trump-esque strategy, evidently devised by spin doctors like those of the Netflix or HBO series. The former president, on the other hand, appealed to his electorate, rather than the centre, attacking Harris on abortion and immigration and ultimately doing Trump, without any major surprises.

Many polls show that Harris came out slightly better in terms of approval ratings, but she seemed to us to be reciting, facilitated by the non-questions of the ABC reporters. Trump seemed to us more bolder than ever, and limited on several issues. The only real flicker was the phrase about some immigrants stealing and eating pets, prompted by the recent words of the idol (of us in the western suburbs of Milan) JD Vance about Haitians. In our opinion, the impact of these debates full of  rules and limits is limited, surely Taylor Swift’s post-transmission endorsement (for Harris) will have more impact than the predictable words of the two candidates. In the present, the question still applies: Harris or Trump?
